Chocolate Smoothies

Smoothies

A family of chocoholics that we are, it would be unthinkable not to have chocolate smoothies in my repertoire of smoothie recipes.  They are perfect for hot summer days when we are craving  (we crave collectively in this case! ) something intensely chocolaty and icy cold.  And yes, they do pack a punch nutritionally and still taste like dessert!  Not a bad deal, I say!!

These smoothies are refined sugar-free and dairy free.  You can’t tell can you?  Thanks to energy boosting, restorative ingredients like almonds, flax seeds, dates, not only are these delightfully thick and creamy, they are also high in fiber, vitamins, minerals and protein.   Like most of my smoothies, these are also banana based.  Sliced frozen banana gets a big thumbs up always.  While bananas and dates sweeten up the smoothies enough for mister and me, I add a teaspoon of honey to each of my children’s smoothies.

I like to soak the pitted dates for 5 minutes or so in warm water to soften them up.  I add the dates with their water in the smoothie.  Almonds  get soaked a night before, if I remember to do so!  Regular cow’s milk, soy milk, almond milk ( very easy to make at home) can be easily substituted for light coconut milk that I have used here.  Use any kind of cocoa powder you have.  I’m not fussy about  the  type of peanut butter used either – creamy, crunchy,  organic or not.

Let’s get to it then…

Almonds – 8

Honey (optional)

Handful of ice

Put all the ingredients into the blender.  Blitz until smooth.  Taste and adjust for sweetness. Thin with as much water/milk as you’d like.

Red velvet 2

Red Velvet Smoothie

Light coconut milk – 200 ml

Banana – 1, sliced and frozen

Beetroot – 1/2, cooked

Dates – 8, soaked

Almonds – 8

Cocoa powder – 2 tsp

Honey (optional)

Put all the ingredients in a blender. Whiz till silky smooth. Taste and adjust for sweetness. Thin with as much water/ milk as you’d like.

Choc Peanut Butter Smoothie 1

Chocolate Peanut Butter Smoothie –  fabulous post workout high protein drink!

Banana – 1 1/2 , sliced and frozen

Light Coconut Milk – 250 ml

Dates – 6, soaked

Flax seeds – 2 tsp

Peanut Butter – 1 Tbsp ( I used crunchy peanut butter)

Cocoa Powder – 1 1/2 tsp

Honey (optional)

Handful of ice

Put all ingredients in a blender and blitz till silky smooth. Taste and adjust for sweetness and peanut buttery taste. Thin with as much water/ milk as you like.

Make it fancy with some chocolate sauce if you like. I used a quick homemade sauce – 2 Tbsp coconut oil, 2 Tbsp honey, 1 tsp cocoa.  Gently heat in a small saucepan.  Adjust for sweetness.  Cool and use as a topping for smoothies, ice creams etc.
