It is believed modak was his favorite treat (hence the moniker&nbsp;<em>modak priya).<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The origins of it can be traced to Maharashtra, but today, modak is made in all parts of India. Each has a different name (<em>kudumu<\/em>&nbsp;in Telugu,&nbsp;<em>mothagam<\/em>&nbsp;in Tamil,&nbsp;<em>modhaka<\/em>&nbsp;in Kannada) and its own way to prepare it.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Of the many variations, the most common ones are&nbsp;<em>ukadiche modak&nbsp;<\/em>and<em>&nbsp;khavyache modak.<\/em>&nbsp;The first is a steamed sweet dumpling made from rice flour and jaggery and grated coconut. The second is made from mawa or khoya and stuffed with nuts and dates. My recipe is an adaptation of it.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\">\n<h2 id=\"why-youll-love-this-recipe\"   class=\"wp-block-heading\" >Why You'll Love This Recipe<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Easiest, no-fuss recipe ever<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Uses just 4 ingredients<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fun project to include kids<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A rich but not overly sweet treat<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Looks so fancy and gorgeous!<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"how-to-make-coconut-mawa-modak\"   class=\"wp-block-heading\" >How To Make Coconut Mawa Modak?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-start-with-the-modak-filling\">Start with the modak filling<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Mix desiccated coconut with&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tashasartisanfoods.com\/blog\/homemade-marzipan-recipe\/\">homemade marzipan<\/a>&nbsp;and keep it aside.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.tashasartisanfoods.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/Coconut-Mawa-Modak-2-928x1024.jpg\" alt=\"marzipan and coconut filling in a blue bowl.\" class=\"wp-image-17135\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-make-the-modak-shell\">Make the modak shell<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Over medium heat, cook grated mawa (khoya) with icing sugar and desiccated coconut.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In about 5 to 7 minutes, the mixture will melt, form a thick paste, and start to leave the sides of the pan.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>At this point, take it off the heat and let it cool for a few minutes.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.tashasartisanfoods.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/Coconut-Mawa-Modak-1-778x1024.jpg\" alt=\"Ingredients for making Coconut Mawa Modak.\" class=\"wp-image-17136\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-shape-the-coconut-modak\">Shape the coconut modak<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Take your modak mold and very, very lightly grease it with ghee.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>By now, the mawa mixture will be cool enough to handle (but still warm).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Make a ball of it and place it into the closed mold using the gap at the bottom.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>With your finger, press the mixture around the mold edges so that it takes the right shape, and you have a hollow cavity in the center.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Now, place a small portion of your coconut filling in the cavity.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Press and pack it tightly, and then, using some more of the mawa mixture, close the base of the modak.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Open the mold, remove the modak, and repeat the process till you use up all the mixture. I preferred to keep the modaks plain and let the nutty flavors from coconut and marzipan shine through. You can incorporate a few drops of\u00a0rose water or even kewra\u00a0water for a nice\u00a0aromatic punch.\u00a0<br\/>Or you can include\u00a0saffron\u00a0in the recipe. Soak a few strands of it in warm milk and whisk it in when you cook the mawa mixture.\u00a0<br\/>Love to experiment in the kitchen?
