NOTES ON CRISPY CHEESE WAFFLES
- All your ingredients for cheese waffles should be at room temperature, especially the milk and egg. It’s just so much easier to make a smooth batter this way. Cold eggs are really hard to incorporate and mix with other ingredients, which makes for an uneven batter.
- Coarsely grind the black pepper.
- Your garlic needs to be finely minced, and your onions need to be finely chopped.
- Grease the waffle iron really well, and make sure it is sizzling hot. That’s how you get a crunchy, crispy cheese waffle crust.
SAVORY CHEESE WAFFLE INGREDIENTS
Flour: I used whole wheat for these savory waffles. Feel free to switch to all-purpose flour or a gluten-free flour of your choice.
Milk: Plant-based or regular, use what you have at hand. This recipe for cheese waffles is very adaptable.
Spices: I love smoked paprika. You can use any red chili powder.
Cheese: I wanted to give the batter for these cheesy waffles an extra dose of deliciousness. That’s why I picked Mother Dairy's cheese cubes. It’s got a lovely, mild flavor that pairs perfectly with anything savory. It melts beautifully. You'll never get a rubbery, stringy texture from this cheese. Ever.
I simply shredded the cheese.
When you make cheese waffles at home, you can customize the cheese blend to your liking, whether it's sharp cheddar cheese, creamy mozzarella, or a mix of your favorites. You can use vegan cheese as well.
SERVE SAVORY WAFFLES FOR DINNER (OR ANY MEAL)
Who knew cheese and waffles would make such a delicious pairing? But they do! The cheese waffle snack is addictive as-is.
But where’s the fun in that, right?
So, here are my ideas for savory waffles toppings, especially if you want to make a whole meal out of them:
- Crispy bacon
- Some grilled veggies
- Add a sunny-side-up egg.
- For me, a simple tomato salad worked the best.
- Or chicken nuggets, perhaps if you’re making the savory waffles for kids.
Top them with a drizzle of maple syrup for a sweet-savory twist that will leave your taste buds dancing. And, oh, do try making a grilled cheese sandwich with them. It's superb!
