Deliciously soft, puffy, slightly chewy naans that are super easy to make! The no-yeast dough comes together in a cinch and making these naans on the stovetop gives them a gorgeous golden brown hue and a lovely flavor!

Easy Stovetop Naan | No- Yeast Recipe

What I love about the stovetop no yeast naan is that it is an easy way out to ordering food. And once the dough is ready, it hardly takes 20 minutes to make. Plus, it can be relished as a snack, served with curry, a dip, or a side to a hot bowl of dal. It pairs deliciously with literally everything!

What is naan?

Naan is a leavened flatbread that is traditionally baked in a clay oven called tandoor. It is astonishingly soft and pillowy that the teeth just sink in and I can’t even begin to put its melody of flavors in words.

How to make easy stovetop naan without yeast?

Step 1: In a bowl, combine all-purpose and wholewheat flours, sugar, salt, baking powder, and baking soda.

Step 2: Mix in the yogurt and knead the dough using water. Knead the dough for 4-5 minutes. If it's too sticky, add some flour, if it's too dry add some water or extra yogurt. You should get a smooth soft dough.

Step 3: Rub a little oil over the ready dough, cover with a kitchen towel, and let the dough rest for 30-60 minutes.

Step 4: Divide the dough into 7 equal-sized balls. Flour the work surface. Working with one dough ball at a time, flatten the dough a bit. Sprinkle the onion seeds on top. Roll out into an oval shape.

Step 5: Heat a griddle pan, and place the rolled-out naan on it, the seed side should face up.

Step 6: Let it cook for a minute till you see bubbles on the surface. Now flip the naan and let it cook on the other side for 2-3 minutes. It will get a bit puffy.

Step 7: Once cooked, take it off the heat and brush liberally with melted butter. Sprinkle some chopped cilantro leaves on top if you wish. Serve hot.

Pro tips for making perfect naan

  • Naan dough doesn’t require strenuous kneading. With gentle movements, within five to six minutes, you will have a nice, smooth, and soft ball of dough.
  • This naan dough makes 4 small or 7 small naans. Feel free to double the recipe if you wish.
  • When rolling the naan, it doesn't need to be a perfect round or oval shape. Just make sure that the nigella seeds are slightly embedded.
  • Make sure the griddle is hot when you place your naan on it. A high flame will help naan cook faster.

Serving the easy stovetop no yeast naan

My recommendation is to savor the naan warm. The taste is a gastronomic wonder. Take it off the griddle, brush it with copious butter or ghee(for that awesome taste), sprinkle it with freshly chopped mint or cilantro, and dig in!

Naans pair beautifully with curries, lentils, and stews. They are also wonderful served with dips and as a quick base for pizzas.

You can even stuff them with cheese to make delicious cheese naans!

They are perfect for making wraps or tacos too.
