What Is Camembert?

Camembert is a soft, moist French cheese made with cow's milk. It's similar to Brie texture-wise. But it is a bit stronger in taste than Brie, which is more buttery. So you can easily substitute one for the other if you prefer.

Why You'll Love This Recipe

Making a fancy appetizer doesn't get easier than this!

Who doesn't love warm, melty, gooey, flavorful cheese?

See the recipe card for full information on ingredients and quantities.

Recipe Variations

You can use Brie cheese instead of Camembert, like I did in this easy baked Brie recipe.

The toppings are endless!

  • Nuts
  • Garlic - You can even use garlic confit for topping
  • Honey
  • Bacon bits
  • Jam - like my persimmon jam or fig jam!

How To Make

This Baked Camembert recipe is just so incredibly easy. Just 3 steps and 15 minutes of baking to give you delicious gooey, melty cheese!

Step 1: Preheat your oven to 180C. Line a tray with parchment paper.

Step 2: Remove the Camembert cheese from its packaging and place it in a small ceramic baking dish. If you get yours in a wooden box, put it back in that.

Step 3: Score the top of the cheese in a crosshatch pattern. Insert the rosemary leaves into the cheese. Drizzle over the olive oil and bake for 12-15 minutes.

Final step: Serve with crackers or bread!

Pro Tips

  • It's important that you don't overbake the cheese. Camembert is perfectly baked when it's golden on top and very soft and melting underneath. Overbaking it will make it dry and hard.
  • Please use the full wheel of cheese.
  • Let the cheese come to room temperature before baking it.

How To Serve Baked Camembert

Baked Camembert is fabulous on a cheese board!

You can serve it with slices of easy everyday bread or even cranberry walnut bread.

Serve it alongside cheese straws, sweet potato crackers, pumpkin cranberry crisps, or sourdough crackers for an easy starter.

Recipe FAQs

Can you eat the rind of Camembert?

Yes, the rind is perfectly edible and delicious. However, you can discard it if you prefer not to eat it.

Can I freeze baked Camembert?

Freezing Camembert is not recommended as it can alter the flavor and texture of the cheese.

Can I reheat baked Camembert?

Yes, this will keep well in the refrigerator for 2-3 days. Reheat it in the microwave. Be careful when reheating though, don't overheat the cheese. Over cooking makes it hard and dry.

Is Camembert vegetarian?

Camembert does contain animal rennet, making it unsuitable for vegetarians. However nowadays, you can find vegetarian-friendly Camembert as well. It's best to check the label while purchasing.
