Why You’ll Love This Recipe
Gluten-free, dairy-free, refined sugar-free, and sinful!
You don't even need to chill it in the refrigerator. Just transfer to a pretty dessert bowl and dig in!
Made in under 20 minutes, and like my mango mousse, there’s no baking.
Needs just 5 ingredients - simple, wholesome, and already in your kitchen.
Chocolate Mousse Ingredients
Avocados: Make sure they’re ripe. The buttery, creamy texture of avocado (and healthy goodness) gives the mousse the same mouthfeel as a classic chocolate mousse.
Chocolate: I kept the chocolate avocado mousse vegan, using dairy-free 60% to 70% dark chocolate. Feel free to use any variety of chocolate you prefer. Just ensure it’s the best quality if you want to make a wickedly good mousse, like my chili chocolate pudding.
Milk: I use thick, unsweetened coconut milk. The creamy texture makes a huge difference to this avocado chocolate mousse. Any milk—almond milk, oat milk, cashew, or regular dairy milk—is great. I have made this mousse recipe with plain Greek yogurt as well.
Sweetener: Use as much as you need. I hardly needed a spoonful of maple syrup. You can substitute it with honey, agave, or date syrup. Even stevia sweetens the deal just right. I’ve made the mousse with it before, and honestly, I couldn't tell the difference.
Sea salt: You need just a pinch to balance the flavors and make the chocolate feel more intense.
Please see the recipe card for full information about ingredients and quantities.
Variations
Vanilla extract is completely optional, but just half a teaspoon of brings out the chocolate flavor. Use homemade or store-bought.
You can really play around with the flavors in this recipe!
Make it boozy with cognac or rum. Add cocoa powder for a more intense chocolate taste. A splash of brewed coffee would be lovely. Some orange zest would give it a fresh burst like it did to my chocolate orange tart. And when you’ve had enough, turn it into chocolate peanut butter pudding.
How To Make Avocado Chocolate Mousse?
Step 1: Melt the chocolate gently over a double boiler or in a microwave. Stir well. Let it cool a bit before adding it to the other ingredients.
Step 2: Combine the avocado, coconut milk, sea salt, and maple syrup in a blender or food processor. Blend until completely smooth.
Step 3: Now slowly add the cooled melted chocolate to the avocado mixture.
Step 4: Blend until everything is smooth and combined well. Taste and adjust for sweetness.
Final step: Divide the mousse into your serving cups, and garnish with berries and chocolate shavings. Serve immediately or refrigerate for 1 - 2 hours for a firmer texture.
Pro Tips
- Please let your melted chocolate cool down a bit before adding it to the other ingredients.
- Make sure avocado and coconut milk are at room temperature. We want all ingredients to be at a similar temperature so the mousse is smooth and not grainy at all.
- In case your chocolate avocado mixture is too thick, you can add some more coconut milk, one tablespoon at a time. This mousse does firm up considerably in the fridge.
- This avocado mousse doesn't need much time to set. You can enjoy it right away or set it in the refrigerator if you prefer a firmer texture.
How To Serve
This avocado chocolate mousse doesn’t need much time to set. You can eat it immediately if you like a pudding-like texture. You can also refrigerate it for an hour or two. It thickens up beautifully, making the texture firmer. Serve cold or bring it back to room temperature.
While it's wonderful without any topping, you can top the vegan chocolate mousse with a dollop of coconut whipped cream. A sprinkle of cacao nibs, or a handful of fresh strawberries or raspberries for a pop of color. Feeling extra indulgent? Drizzle melted dark chocolate.
I just topped it with some chocolate shavings, freeze-fried raspberries, and fresh strawberries and served it at room temperature!
Recipe FAQs
If you mix cold ingredients with melted chocolate, the chocolate can seize up, turning your silky-smooth dessert grainy. Let the melted chocolate cool slightly before blending, and make sure your avocado and milk are at room temp. That way, everything comes together easily.
Absolutely not! The avocado only lends texture to this easy chocolate mousse recipe (and some healthy goodness)! All you taste is chocolate.
No, you don’t. If you feel the chocolate mousse is already sweet enough, leave the sweetener out.
Vegan avocado chocolate mousse doesn’t need much time to set. You can eat it immediately or refrigerate it for an hour or two. It thickens up beautifully, making the texture firmer. Serve cold or bring it back to room temperature.
Mousse stays well in the fridge for 2–3 days. Although I can’t imagine why the delicious, decadent dessert will last that long!

Hi Tasha! This is lovely I cant wait to try it! I wanted to ask if it's ok to substitute the coconut milk with Almond milk. Also, is Greek yoghurt anything like homemade dahi?
Natasha Minocha says
Hi Ananya, thank you for stopping by! Yes, you can use almond milk instead of coconut milk. Greek yogurt is really really thick dahi, so if you don't have access to it, you can easily use hung yogurt. Make sure all the water is drained off and its full fat dahi. So you can use either the milk or the yogurt in the recipe. Please do let me know how it worked out for you. xx

Thanks a bunch! Will definitely do so
Yogita says
Hey, how long can you store it in the fridge after preparation?
Natasha Minocha says
Hi Yogita, I would say a couple days. Do keep it out of the refrigerator for a little bit to allow the mousse to soften up as it does harden up as it chills. Hope this helps! 🙂
